Case Study - Future Development Strategy

THE BACKGROUND

We were commissioned by Bay of Plenty Regional Council in association with Smartgrowth to design and produce their Future Development Strategy (FDS). The FDS provides a unified vision, direction and voice for the future of the western Bay of Plenty to help develop a great place to live, learn, work and play. By taking into account a range of environmental, social, economic and cultural matters, the strategy identifies opportunities for building our community. Ensuring a balanced approach to growth management is an important part of planning for the future and connecting the spaces and places that create communities where we live, learn, work and play. Not just now, but in the future. The strategy is focused on implementation and future thinking. It has a 50-year horizon with a particular focus on the next 20 years.

THE BRIEF

To design, produce and print manage the FDS and summary document.

Their strategy vision:

  • Strengthen visionary leadership and collaboration
  • Grow a sustainable economy
  • Integrated planning and settlement
  • Build the community
  • Sustain and improve the environment
  • Recognise cultural identity and change

Their Goal

To produce a strategy document that would engage with the wider Western Bay community and allow their views of what the future would ideally look like to be captured succinctly, easily and without ambiguity.

THE WORK

60-page A4 landscape full document and 16-page summary document designed, print managed and delivered.

THE CHALLENGE

The collation and representation of often complex data in multiple formats from multiple partners and stakeholders. We had only one hit at producing a document that appealed to many diverse sectors of the community, that was easily digestible, looked good, told their story and left no questions unanswered. We produced graphs, charts, diagrams and infographics using hero photography where appropriate.

THE RESULT

Two documents that we are extremely proud of! We had total control of the print management process too, so we knew exactly how we wanted the work to both look and feel. We settled on a landscape format on uncoated stock which allowed us to best represent the data provided and was ultimately just a little bit quirky.
Our client allowed us just the right amount of creative license and had total trust in our vision for how the materials should look.

THE CLIENT FEEDBACK

Once delivered the documents were well received from all partners – Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Tauranga City Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council and The Combined Tangata Whenua Forum.

“Lemonface Design completed all the graphic design and document creation work for the Proposed SmartGrowth Future Development Strategy in 2018. This was a complex project that required agreement from a range of staff and politicians across three councils, the New Zealand Transport Agency and tangata whenua. Sarah-Jayne was fantastic to work with and made the whole process enjoyable, despite the many amendments we required to satisfy all the partners on the project. Lemonface arranged everything, including the printing, and the final product was well received by our stakeholders and community for its clarity. I would not hesitate to recommend Lemonface to assist with producing documents and collateral for the local government sector as they understand what we need and can deliver on the brief.”
